Teaching Excellence Fair 2006
The The Teaching Excellence Fair celebrates the many important teaching initiatives at the University of Pittsburgh and thereby illustrates the important role of teaching at our University. The Fair will feature the projects funded under the auspices of the Provost's Advisory Council an Instructional Excellence's Innovation in Education awards program. A variety of presentations, displays, and round-table discussions will highlight faculty initiatives and innovations related to teaching and to the use of instructional technology. I encourage all faculty to take advantage of this special event.

Status: Available
Air Date: 11/8/2006
Air Time: 9:30 AM EST
Length: 25 Minutes 9 Seconds

Health literacy—the degree to which individuals understand basic health information—is now recognized as a critical determinant of health care outcomes and health care costs. But how should we teach our medical students to communicate with people of various backgrounds and with differing degrees of health literacy? In their project, Improving Medical Students’ Cultural Competency through Developing Community Patient Education Materials: Health Literacy Meets Social Marketing¸ Brian A. Primack, Thuy Bui, and Carl I. Fertman have worked to answer that question.Medical students were taught the principles of marketing and helped to use those principles to create health education brochures on various health topics tailored to certain populations. Many exciting aspects of this program will be discussed, including its evaluation, the development of a large database of student projects, and examples of winning projects chosen to be professionally printed and disseminated in the community.

TEF 2006 Virtual Experiments: Teaching Probability as a Lab
Presenter(s): Dean E. Nelson
Status: Available
Air Date: 11/8/2006
Air Time: 10:30 AM EST
Length: 21 Minutes 6 Seconds

Presenter Dean E. Nelson Mathematics, University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. Dean E. Nelson’s project, Teaching Probability Theory as a Lab with Simulation and Symbolic Computation, is an example of introducing technology used by students into the classroom. In a traditional lab, students explore concepts and theory by doing experiments. With the use of laptop computers and symbolic computational software, students are able to explore the concepts and theories of probability. Simulations produce results for virtual experiments and ease of symbolic manipulation by the software allows for increased exploration of the mathematical descriptions of probability distributions.
TEF 2006 Video Demos for Introductory Physics
Presenter(s): Russell J Clark PhD
Status: Available
Air Date: 11/8/2006
Air Time: 11:00 AM EST
Length: 21 Minutes 8 Seconds

Presenter Russell Clark Physics & Astronomy, University of Pittsburgh Physics lab students’ biggest problems usually occur early in most lab sessions when they have difficulty with equipment setup or with experimental procedures. Recognizing these challenges, Russell Clark developed Digital Video Demonstrations for Introductory Physics Lab Experiments, 50 one- to two-minute demonstrations addressing these “nuts and bolts” issues. Accessible in the lab itself, these brief video tutorials resolve most difficulties likely to arise in a particular session. Since the tutorials are also available online, enterprising students are able to view them beforehand, leaving them better prepared and able to answer basic questions on their own. Additionally, the videos will benefit the course TAs themselves: they will have time available for addressing more critical, detailed issues and the videos will also serving as a training instrument for both new TA lab instructors and as a refresher for current instructors.

TEF 2006 Keeping the Records Straight
Presenter(s): Valerie Watzlaf
Status: Available
Air Date: 11/8/2006
Air Time: 11:30 AM EST
Length: 20 Minutes 6 Seconds

Presenter Valerie Watzlaf School of Health & Rehabilitation SciencesWith medical errors on the rise, the electronic health record (EHR) may be able to actually decrease medical errors and improve quality of medical care. However, are all health professionals aware of the many uses of the EHR and are they able to use it proficiently? The faculty within the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and the School of Social Work developed their project, An Online Interdisciplinary Course on Electronic Health Record Technology, to teach health and rehabilitation students about the many different aspects of EHR technology and how to use different EHR systems.
